China held the Beijing meeting between China, Russia and Iran on the Iranian nuclear issue on March 14.

According to a poll launched by CGTN for netizens around the world, respondents generally consider the Beijing meeting a useful attempt to promote a political solution to the Iranian nuclear issue, and appreciate China’s constructive role in the Iranian nuclear issue.

As early as a decade ago, Iran and the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany reached the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). However, the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and restarted sanctions and extreme pressure on Iran, causing a dilemma on the Iranian nuclear issue to reemerge.

In the survey, 87.6 percent of respondents say that the JCPOA is an important achievement in dealing with sensitive issues through dialog and negotiation, and that all countries should maintain its validity instead of overturning it and starting a new one. And as many as 89.8 percent of the respondents point out that any illegal unilateral sanctions, threat of force and extreme pressure will not help resolve the Iranian nuclear issue.

Besides, 89.5 percent of the respondents believe that political and diplomatic engagement and dialogue based on mutual respect is the only effective and viable option for resolving the Iranian nuclear issue. Another 90.6 percent of the respondents call on the parties concerned with the Iranian nuclear issue to refrain from taking actions that escalate the situation, and jointly create a favorable atmosphere and conditions for diplomatic efforts.

On the Iranian nuclear issue, it is the general consensus of the international community to abide by international rules and maintain the integrity of the nuclear non-proliferation regime.

While Iran should abide by its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, the international community should also respect Iran’s right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy. In this regard, 87.4 percent of the respondents call on all countries to uphold the authority of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and to refrain from acts that impede the professional, objective and impartial performance of the functions of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

As many as 89.5 percent of the respondents believe that in the face of the continuing volatile situation in the Middle East, we should promote the construction of a Middle East security architecture that is universally accepted by all parties, and avoid linking the Iranian nuclear issue with other issues.

From facilitating the historic reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia, to promoting the internal reconciliation of Palestinian factions, to holding the China-Russia-Iran meeting on the Iranian nuclear issue in Beijing, China, as a responsible major country, has always been committed to the political settlement of regional hotspot issues, and to the maintenance of peace and stability in the Middle East.

In this regard, 87.8 percent of the respondents appreciate China’s constructive role in the Iranian nuclear issue and expect China to make more contributions to the global governance process.

The survey was released on CGTN’s English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian platforms, with a total of 7,766 respondents voting and expressing their opinions within 24 hours.
